Ok everyone - Chris keeps hounding me about finding a place for this trip we've talked with everyone about. Before I start researching it and making suggestions I want to know what everyone is expecting out of this. So post your thoughts as either comments on this post or as a new post on this blog. I want everything out in the open from the get go so we can all have a good time and nobody feels like they're getting jipped.
I hope we can accommodate everyone's wishes but we will definitely have to make some compromises if we want to have a good time together. I.E. I don't want to stay at a hotel in St. George and swim in the pool and I don't think Lindsay Burton wants to backpack 10 miles and sleep under a tarp either. I'll start the comments with what we would like.
By the way, if you're not logged in you can still post comments but please identify yourself or I'll have to delete it. And let's all be nice.

We (the Rockwoods) want to go somewhere in Southern Utah where we can camp in our tent, have a campfire, cook on the stoves, go 4-wheeling (if we're taking them) go on some little hikes, and go mountain biking. We don't want to stay in a hotel. And yes, I'll be finding geocaches but they are pretty much everywhere. Time-wise with Jacob's school the best days for us would be Mar 20-24 (thurs to mon) or April 16-21 (wed-mon).
ReplyDeletewhy is this the first time i'm hearing about this? a little unfair if you ask me. what if i wanted to come, but flights are too expensive now?
ReplyDeletepunks.
Who's idea was it to stay in a hotel? I think that sounds great, Rockwoods. I vote for it in April.
ReplyDeleteThat last post was posted by Julie. Chris probably has his own opinion. To add to that I think Zions National park would be way fun!
ReplyDeleteWell, camping sounds fun and all BUT I don't know if March would work and the dates in April are right around Craig's finals (April 18th - 25th). Craig also starts summer school a week later. He only has 1 week off between finals and summer semester.
ReplyDeleteIf those are the only dates that work for everyone, our feelings won't be hurt if you have to go without us.
A hotel still sounds good to me....I would compromise and go hiking, 4 wheeling (although I don't think you can 4 wheel at Zion's), and do other outdoor adventures.
Those are our thoughts. :)
What week does Craig have off? We might be able to try for that unless you've got other plans. You're right, we can't go 4-wheeling in Zion's and there's not a lot of mt biking either. The Moab area might work, it's got just about everything.
ReplyDeletejust keep in mind that i am coming the weekend of memorial day. can't we do this trip then?
ReplyDeleteor what about another trip, back up to mirror lake or something close we could do for a day or 2.
as far as a compromise- i think you should get a campground not too far away from some hotels. the rockwoods, chris, whoever else can camp, and the rest of you's can stay in a hotel. that way everyone is happy, and the trip will be more enjoyable. the hotel-ers can meet up with the campers for hiking, 4-wheeling, etc, or go swimming when they want. just throwing that out there.
We could do something Memorial day weekend too with you Kate, but Mirror Lake won't be an option unless you want to sleep in an igloo. With all the snow we're getting everything's going to be snowed in for a long time.
ReplyDeleteI think Craig's break is April 28thru May 2nd. Let us check for sure.
ReplyDeleteThis is Chris. We can go any weekend, but Easter weekend. We will be camping, but are not opposed to people staying nearby in Hotels. We want to go somewhere where 4-wheelers and bikes are allowed.
ReplyDeleteI think Southern Utah was a good compromise so that Adam and Lindsay would/could go.
Craig and Adam you guys can miss a day or 2 of school can't you? You both have enough time on your hands to make up for it.
I would suggest people really saying if they want to go or not so we don't try to work around them and then have them not end up going. If everyone really wants to go then I am sure we will work around everyone's schedule so all can go.
What is the plan for the days we will go. Thursday through Monday or what? Again, we are easy on what we can do with that.
MJ said: kate, keep looking for flights. we thought you were going to costa rica and wouldn't be able to go. March 20 (thurs), 21 thru 24 would be best for me. My dream would be to stay in Zions. Go on little hikes with the kids. Hike the narrows a little if the kids could do it and if it was warm enough. stay at the zions lodge or camp.
ReplyDeleteMJ says: If I have to, I could use my 3 personal days (2 + an alternative day that I have to pay part of). Moab sounds good. Could we river run? I love you guys and want to go on a fun fun vacation so everyone is the happiest yet!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteMJ - I hear you on hiking the narrows - it's one of my absolute favorite hikes...but there is not a chance we'd be able to hike them in March, especially after all this snow. The water will be way too high and way too cold. The time for the narrows is mid to late summer when it's scorching hot and the water is below your knees and feels oh so nice. I don't think we'd be able to afford rafting and our kiddies are still too young for the guides to allow them. I'd love to do that too - sorry, I'm not trying to pi.. I mean rain on your parade. Great input! Thanks!
ReplyDeletei'm not going to look for flights when we don't even know what weekend this is happening. figure that out, and then i can look for flights. and really i'm just giving andy crap cause he said everyone knew about it. but i didn't. i wanted to make him feel bad for not telling me. i probably wouldn't be able to come unless my loving family wanted to purchase me a plane ticket so they could enjoy my company at this wonderful burton WHOLE family vacation.
ReplyDeleteMy break is Mon-Sun Mar 10-16. Can't really go any other days. Not sure if we can go then anyways with the new house costs and such.
ReplyDeleteI'm coming to Utah on Feb 15th through 18th, so we can talk a bit more then.
I'll have Madalin 8-4:30 sat, 9-5:30 Sun, and 12-8:30 Mon. Lets plan something at Kamas around those times. Sadly, Lindsey can't come anymore.
Chris, I take your comment as a direct hit towards us. If we didn't want to go we would've said rather than try and figure out a time we can go.
ReplyDeleteSounds like we are all having different ideas as to what to do for this trip.
I could miss a few days of school, I just prefer not to miss finals week or the first week of summer semester. Mom's ideas sounds fun!!!
Didn't you guys see the 'Let's all be nice' rule at the top? Craig, Chris does have a point about it sounding like you kind of didn't want to go but were trying to be nice, and Chris, you could be a little more tactful. I for one would love it if everyone could come but the truth is our schedules won't all mesh.
ReplyDeleteI didn't realise that Mar 20-24 was Easter weekend. We wouldn't want to go to the Moab area then anyway since it's the Jeep Safari. I'm not opposed to some staying in hotels nearby at all either. What I don't want is to have everyone going in different directions to the point that we all feel like we compromised on time or location only to be doing different things anyway.
I think Zion's would be okay but the best stuff there would still be cold, ie the narrows. I think Southern Utah is still a great idea becuase it will be warm there in the spring and right now warm sounds nice. Maybe canyonlands or Capitol Reef.
With our two best weekends out of the question I'd say that the Rockwoods don't have a preference. A Thursday or Friday through Monday would be ideal. It sounds like your best weekend is out MJ too.
